Art Opening: Leah Kohlenberg, "Florals"

  • Mom & Pop Wine Shop 6908 Northeast Sandy Boulevard Portland, OR, 97213 United States (map)

Join us in the shop Saturday evening to meet our next artist, Leah Kohlenberg for her exhibit of new floral works. Complimentary tasting & snacks.
According to Leah:
”Flowers are always, for me, where transitions happen. When I'm working to shift my work's focus, I always start with them. Because I love them, because they are beautiful, and because structurally they have a lot of flow. This latest series is focused on preserving some of the initial, or raw mark-making, from the underpainting. In this series, I'm spending less time physically painting, but more time staring at the painting to decide which direction I should take it.”
Leah Kohlenberg has painted for 19 years, and is primarily self taught, though she's studied at the Gage Academy and Pacific Northwest College of Art at the Art Students League of New York. She also spent five years in Eastern Europe, studying painting and drawing privately with artists in Budapest, Hungary, Yerevan, Armenia and Zagreb, Croatia.
She is currently represented by Fairweather Gallery in Seaside, Oregon; and by Salty Teacup Gallery and Boutique in Portland, Oregon. she been competitively selected to participate as an artist in Portland Open Studios (her work was scored by an independent jury of professional artists) every year between 2015-19, and currently serves as president of the board. She has had solo shows at the Hadas Gallery in New York; at the Mueveleti Terulet Gallery in Budapest, and at the American Embassy in Yerevan, Armenia, among others. Her art is in private collections around the world.
She has taught art for 11 years, founding the Roaming Studio in 2010 (renamed Leah Kohlenberg Fine Art Classes in 2016). She was awarded a Regional Arts and Culture Council grant to publish her first book, The Roaming Studio Step-by-Step Guide to Drawing Faces, released in early 2016. She also offers an art at work program, designed to bring drawing and painting to non-artists in the workplace.
