Samyak “Sam” Yamauchi is a mostly self-taught Portland painter who came to painting in 2013 after many years of working with glass mosaics. She is inspired by color and the deeply soulful, discovery process of being in the moment with the materials and the imagery as it arises. Her approach is part contemplation and intention, part intuition and imagination, and a whole lot of playing around until she knows it’s “right”.
This show, a collection of old and new paintings, shows how even though her style has been changing, two things have stayed consistent: The intuitive, spontaneous way she paints with color and mark-making with no forethought to the outcome. The imagery arises out of the layers of color and marks that she lays down. She develops the images whose story resonates with her at the deepest level; The way she works with color--The colors speak to her and to each other, whether they are sitting side by side in solid blocks or blended by painting layer over layer. Color is always integral to the composition and the narrative of the imagery.
