We will be welcoming Roseway neighbor and artist Anna Mafchir to the wine shop for an art opening & complimentary tasting. Come meet Anna and see her colorful and layered works and hear about her unique collaborative process. Here’s her artist bio:
Anna grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and knew from a young age that art would be a part of her life. After receiving her BFA at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland she returned to New Mexico and taught Photography to high school students for thirteen years. Anna has returned to Portland and is teaching art at a K-8 school. She now lives in an old farmhouse with her family in the Roseway neighborhood where she gets to work with her two boys in their garage studio.
My creative process is very intuitive and spontaneous. Beginning with a chosen subject and using a variety of media including photography, painting, drawing and found objects, I explore the potential of that subject. Each piece comes into realization through exploring color and texture and building depth with shapes and words. Through this process the works assume their identities with varying impact and nuance.
I define myself as a mother, an artist and an art educator. These three parts weave in and out of each other in wonderfully complex ways. With two young boys the best way to utilize my studio time is to create alongside them. I offer them new materials to explore with on their own pieces and invite them to help with mine. Inspired by my observations of my boys uninhibited artistic process, my style has come to life. My eight and eleven year-olds have been active collaborators as they have helped compose, create and define some of the works in a way that only young, spirited souls can.
